PSHE

What is PSHE?

Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) education is the school subject that deals with real life issues affecting our children, families and communities. It is concerned with the social, health and economic realities of their lives, experiences and attitudes. It supports students to be healthy (mentally and physically); safe (online and offline) and equipped to thrive in their relationships and careers.

At The Adeyfield Academy, PSHE education is taught for one hour every two weeks, we also hold drop-down days in which subject and career specialists are invited to speak to our students as they outline key topics. 

Most of PSHE education became statutory for all schools from September 2020 under the Children and Social Work Act 2017. This includes Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) and Health Education in Secondary Schools. Most of our sex education lessons are already taught through the Science curriculum.

There are three core themes covered in PSHE:

Theme 1: Health & Wellbeing

Topic areas:

  • Personal Identity
  • Healthy lifestyles
  • Keeping safe

Health & Wellbeing
 

Health Education aims to:
  • give children the information they need to make good decisions about their own health and wellbeing,
  • recognise issues in themselves and others, and
  • seek support as early as possible when issues arise.
By the end of secondary school, pupils will have been taught content on:
  • mental well being
  • internet safety and harms
  • physical health and fitness
  • healthy eating
  • drugs, alcohol and tobacco
  • health and prevention
  • basic first aid
  • changing adolescent body

Mandatory in all secondary schools from September 2020

Theme 2: Relationships

Topic areas:

  • Healthy Relationships
  • Relationships and sex education (RSE)
  • Relationship safety
  • Valuing difference

Relationships & Sex Education
 

Relationships and Sex Education will build on the teaching at primary school. It aims to give young people the information they need to help them develop healthy, nurturing relationships of all kinds.

Our school will cover content on what healthy and unhealthy relationships look like and what makes a good friend, colleague and successful marriage or committed relationship. At the appropriate time, the focus will move to developing intimate relationships, to equip your child with knowledge they need to make safe, informed and healthy choices as they progress through adult life.

By the end of secondary school, pupils will have been taught content on:
  • families
  • respectful relationships, including friendships
  • online media
  • being safe
  • intimate and sexual relationships, including sexual health

Theme 3: Living in the Wider World

Topic areas:

  • Rights and responsibilities
  • Economy wellbeing
  • Employability and enterprise
  • Career progression

Living in the Wider World
 

Students should be to set realistic yet ambitious targets and goals:
  • To know about different career paths and work routes.
  • To understand how people present themselves online and how this can have a positive or negative impact on them.
By the end of secondary school pupils would have been taught content on:
  • rights and responsibilities as members of diverse communities, as active citizens and participants in the local and national economy;
  • how to make informed choices and respond in the appropriate way, taking examples from the variety of views that exist in the world;
  • how to develop team working and leadership skills and develop flexibility and resilience;
  • the economic and business environment and
  • how personal financial choices can affect oneself and others and about rights and responsibilities as consumers.

Not yet mandatory, however we continue to teach this theme at  The Adeyfield Academy.
