Shakespeare's Globe Theatre trip

Shakespeare's Globe Theatre London

On the 11th of February forty five year nines were treated to a day exploring Shakespeare‘s Globe Theatre. The day began with a trip on the coach to London; we soaked up the changes in scenery from Hemel to the busy London town.

Once in London we walked along the Thames on the South Bank to the Tate Gallery. The gallery filled with modern art fascinated us all and opening our minds to new ideas. Next we went across the Millennium Bridge (or as Mrs Bristow calls it the wibbly wobbly bridge) to see the fantastic London sky line. From Canary Wharf to St Paul's and of course the wonderful Thames was laid before us glittering with the last remains of the snow.

Once in the Globe Theatre we were broken in to two groups and given a tour of the theatre itself. We learned how the audience were seated according to their social standing. We were allowed to sit where the Lords and Ladies would have sat. Then we were up on the stage seeing the Globe from the actor perspective. Above us was the 'Heavens' painted with the signs of the Zodiac, below us was 'Hell' and the trap door under the stage. Watching our tour guide and actor project across the stage gave us the confidence to do it ourselves.

We were then taken to the workshop rooms where we did an hour workshop exploring the intricacies of Shakespeare's language. We did lots of drama activities about Romeo and Juliet and the battle between love and hate. Everyone joined in and had fun trying to understand the play.

The day ended with a relaxing trip home on the coach. Special thanks to Mrs Bristow, Mrs Morris, Miss Craddock, Mrs Burrows and Mrs Faye for taking us.
